What is the EMSELLA By MAUD Medical?
This is a customized program using what is Known as the ‘Kegel Throne’ to stimulate the pelvic muscles along with counselling and retention therapy to achieve long lasting outcomes.
EMSELLA is a non-invasive, FDA approved therapy to condition the pelvic floor muscles, and is especially helpful to individuals who struggle with urinary incontinence or want improved sexual function. This revolutionary device is now offered in Calgary at MAUD Medical Clinic.
This kegel chair contains a powerful magnet (2.5 Tesla, similar strength to MRI). The energy is focalized to the depths and location of the pelvic floor muscles using a technology called, High Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Energy (HIFEM). HIFEM Technology triggers intense pelvic floor muscle contractions by targeting neuromuscular tissue and depolarizing motor neurons. What can I expect during EMSELLA By MAUD Medical Treatments?
During EMSELLA treatment, you will sit on the chair completely clothed or wearing full bottom underwear. We recommend wearing full bottom underwear only to help achieve best results and positioning during treatment. When the treatment starts, you will feel slight tingling and vibrations in your pelvic floor muscles, it will then feel like contractions.
The 30 minute treatment is completely comfortable and tolerable. Typical treatment protocol for incontinence are 6 sessions booked 2-5 days apart. A Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist and MAUD Medical Consultant will provide individualized at-home exercises to maximize the retention.
Those who are pregnant, have any metal, electronic devices, or copper IUDs may not be treated.
You will be able to return to normal activities immediately after the treatment.
How soon will I notice a difference?
Most individuals notice a difference after the first session. Most patients notice the optimal results after the three sessions. You may find that your symptoms may get worse before they start to get better due to some initial pelvic floor muscle fatigue.

How long do EMSELLA By MAUD Medical results last?
Depending on the severity of your condition. If you had minor incontinence, you may never need EMSELLA again.
If you had more severe incontinence, you may need a touch up treatment as early as 6 months. At which point, our consultants can reassess and create a treatment plan for you.
Our Pelvic floor Physiotherapist will provide you with exercises and homework throughout the treatment as our goal is long lasting results.
About Urinary Incontinence:
Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine. It is very common in women and typically a result of weak pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor muscles play an important role in supporting pelvic organs and controlling continence, and weak muscles are less capable of supporting youe pelvic organs and controlling continence.
There are three different types of urinary incontinence:
1. Stress incontinence: is when there is exerted pressure on the bladder causing leakage. This can be caused by coughing, laughing, sneezing, or exercising.
2. Urge: is the sudden, intense urge to urinate frequently.
3. Mixed incontinence: is a combination of both stress and urge incontinence.
Physiological changes can contribute to the development of urinary incontinence; changes such as childbirth (specifically vaginal delivery), menopause, and aging can decondition pelvic floor muscles.
In order to improve symptoms, it is important to strengthen these muscles. Possible ways to improve your condition may include lifestyle changes, pelvic floor physiotherapy or EMSELLA for Kegel exercises.
About Sexual Function:
EMSELLA was originally designed to treat urinary incontinence in women. As patients were receiving treatments, they were also noting enhanced sexual function and orgasms. This led BTL’s physicians to research and put forward studies specifically toward function and sexual enhancement in men and women. This was an unexpected reaction for patients who were being treated for incontinence, however it opened up the potentials of HIFEM technology. In 2020, the FDA approved the sexual function protocol on EMSELLA and physicians are currently using EMSELLA to treat erectile dysfunction.
How much does EMSELLA By MAUD Medical cost?:
Pricing and payment options can be discussed the day of your consultation. Rates will vary depending on your needs from $270-$330/ treatment.
FDA approved protocol consists of six treatments. A typical treatment would consist of consultation, an exam with a pelvic floor physiotherapist and series of six EMSELLA By MAUD Medical treatments followed with retention counselling. For optimal results, all treatments must be completed within one month. Commitment to your success is priority, you must book all treatments 2-4 days apart according to FDA approved protocol.
Can I claim EMSELLA under health benefits?
Depending on your extended healthcare insurance coverage, you may be able to claim for EMSELLA By MAUD treatments and direct billing.
