At this time, seeing MAUD Medical doctor for menopause treatment requires a referral from your family doctor. This consultation approach allows us to help the most amount of women across Alberta.

Our treatments can be many different things from education, counselling and support, provide non medication options, medications including non-hormonal and hormonal treatments.

Menopause is a natural transition every woman will go through and is marked after 12 consecutive months without a period. The average age of perimenopause is mid 40s, while menopause is 51.5 years old. Menopause marks the end of menstruation and fertility, though it is not uncommon to experience these at a much earlier or later age.

Technically you haven’t reached menopause until you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.
The emotional and physical symptoms associated with menopause can show up earlier in the perimenopause phase
(women report symptoms as early as late 30s) but majority begin perimenopause in their late 40s -
Many women report symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, cognition, low libedo, vaginal symptoms (dryness, itching), sexual discomfort, and urinary incontinence.

80% of women will experience smooth menopausal transition with symptoms that do not have much impact on their quality of life.
Approximately 20% of women will experience more severe symptoms that begin to affect their relationships or work. Impacting their quality of life.
These symptoms can begin two to eight years prior to the final menstrual period, which is defined by a decline in hormonal factors, especially estrogen. -
There is no cost to see our medical doctors for hormone therapy.
All Alberta residence with a valid provincial health insurance card does not pay for medical services.
Depending on what medications or treatment options are offered, you will pay for those therapies with your extended health insurance plan.

Hormone testing for menopause is not helpful as our levels fluctuate throughout the day. Maud doctors treat by symptoms not numbers. So we recommend journalling symptoms on your phone or in a note book prior to your appointment.

Hormone therapy (HT) increases the incidence of breast cancer by 1-2 women per 1000, after 5 years of usage.
A risk slightly greater than that caused by drinking one glass of wine per day, and slightly less than that caused by drinking two glasses of wine per day, being obese, or having low physical activity.
The absolute risk of breast cancer caused by Hormone Therapy in for any one person is small. The risk returns to normal within 5 years after stopping hormone therapy. -
Currently, we are about 4-6 months wait for hormone therapy.
Perimenopause counselling is about 2 months.

Urinary Tract Infection

As hormone levels decline, the vaginal tissues, muscles, glands and functions of the vagina and urinary tract can be directly impacted. Urinary tract infections UTI can lead to more serious infections (e.g. bladder infections).

Urgency & Frequency of Urination

Short-term hormone therapy (HT) can improve a women’s bone structure, and then other medications can be used to sustain bone health over the longer-term. Speak with Calgary Physician to determine if hormone therapy would benefit you.
Nutrition counselling would be beneficial to look over your daily food and vitamin consumption, to reduce the risk of osteoporosis women should consume 1000-1200 mg of calcium per day, and 800 IU of vitamin D per day.
