Period Solutions for the Earth & YOU

On average a person will use 20 tampons per cycle, multiply that by 12 cycles a year, and that’s 240 tampons going in our bodies, then into landfills per year.

Not to mention the pads, liners, and dozens of other products that we use. Why we choose the products we choose are based on so many reasons, comfort, accessibility, price, and even concerns for sustainability.

With 2022’s Earth Day coming up, let’s round up some of MAUD’s top choices for alternative period products

The Nixit

Number one on our list is Nixit, a Made in Canada (Just like us!), Health Canada approved menstrual disk.

Menstrual discs are stem-less options that stay in our vaginal canal by balancing behind our pubic bones, no suction needed! The Nixit is made of a BPA free silicone that gives up to 12 hours of protection. With proper washing and storage, the Nixit lasts for five years, that’s five years of not needing to do your monthly pads & tampons run.

The Nixit is great for people who are comfortable with their vulvar anatomy and comfortable with insertion, those who are active and want solutions for busy days, and those who want to reduced their overall period waste.

Period Underwear

Like a pad but made of cotton, breathable, and way more secure, period underwear is a cute, low stress solution that works as a complete replacement for pads, or even just for extra security when wearing a tampon. We love the period underwear by Rosaseven Lingerie, a female owned company based in Vancouver that produces sizes XS to 2XL. With options for light to heavy flows, and delicate lace detailing, everybody will find a pair they love.

Want something more everyday? Aisle is another Canadian company that carries period underwear in all styles, even high coverage boxer briefs.

Period underwear is the perfect solution for those wanting a little extra security with their tampon, or those that want to feel like they’re not using a period product at all.

Organic Tampons & Pads

Not wanting to give up your tried and true grocery list must-haves? Try organic tampons and pads!

The products usually found on grocery store shelves are made of rayon and cotton grown with pesticides, bleached white and sometimes with added fragrance. Organic tampons like those from Viv for your V or Organyc are made of 100% organic cotton, giving a gentler, less chemically-processed alternative. These also decompose faster than your typical tampons and pads, which can include plastic polymers derived from crude-oil for absorption.

Not wanting to make the switch yet? Here are some easy ways to be friendlier to the planet on your period

  1. Dispose of used tampons and pads in appropriate containers/garbage cans, instead of flushing them!

  2. Try applicator-less tampons, these are more compact to fit in your purse and do not have a plastic applicator

  3. Share your knowledge of period product alternatives, maybe somebody else would love to make the switch and just don’t know their options yet
