After Nexplanon Insertion

  1. You may remove the pressure bandage in 24 hours. You can remove the small adhesive bandage over the insertion site after 3-5 days.

  2. You are likely to have changes in your bleeding patterns. These may include changes in bleeding frequency, intensity, duration, or amenorrhea (no period). The bleeding pattern experienced during the first 3 months using Nexplanon is broadly predictive of the future bleeding pattern for many women.

  3. If your implant is inserted anytime other than Day 1-5 of your cycle avoid sex for the first week or you need to use back up birth control such as condoms for these first 7 days.

  4. Call our clinic (587-352-6283) or if it’s after clinic hours, call 8-11 if you have any of the following:

• sudden change in your periods

• unable to feel the implant in your upper arm

• sensation of pin and needles in the arm hands or fingers

• ongoing severe arm pain, altered strength or movement of the arm

• bruising swelling or redness that is persisting or worsening

• if you might have been exposed to an STI (sexually transmitted infection)

NEXPLANON DOES NOT PROTECT YOU FROM STIS SO WE STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU KEEP USING CONDOMS YOUR NEXPLANON IMPLANT WILL NEED TO BE EITHER REPLACED OR REMOVED IN 3 YEARS
